Tutor Spotlight on Nekeya M.

Thank You For Being Such A Vital Part Of Our Team, Nekeya M. We Look Forward To Sharing More About You So Others Can Get To Know You Better!

Tell us a bit about your backstory and what led you down your current life path.

In 2006 I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Biology.  After graduation, I began to work in a Food Safety Lab for several years and then desired a change.  After much thought and prayer, I decided to combine my love of science and a passion for teaching children together and became a Science teacher.  As a full time teacher, dance leader, children’s ministry teacher, and mentor I am able to inspire generations, and teach the skills I have learned.

What or who inspired you to pursue your career?

I have always had a passion for science and math. In elementary school, I was blessed with great teachers who saw the potential within me and pushed me to be great. Throughout my educational path, I have great teachers, instructors, and mentors to guide me along my destined path.

What is one thing you are most proud of achieving in your life?

The ability to see my students become successful and achieve their goals is definitely what I am proud of the most. The understanding of knowing that I have impacted someone and have allowed them to unlock their potential for greatness. Another thing I am proud of is becoming a teacher/Tutor. This has been my greatest achievement because I get touch so many lives.

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

There are two people I am truly grateful for, my mentor Mrs. Green and my Science Professor Dr. Badon. They both helped me in college, and throughout my transition to my teaching career. They have guided me through life to grow and helped me achieve what I have today. Dr. Badon would not let me quit. I remember a time in college where everything seemed so hard and overwhelming. I wanted to change my major. Dr. Badon had me to meet her in her office, she encouraged me, provided opportunities, and helped me succeed. Mrs. Green was my mentor during my transition from Lab work to teaching. She prayed and encouraged me as I found my way in becoming the teacher I am today. I definitely owe them both so much.

What do you enjoy most about teaching/tutoring?

I love helping students find their way of learning. I love it when my students see that they can achieve what at first seemed impossible but now they have conquered it. One of my favorite quotes from one of my teachers is, “Nothing is ever yours, until you discover it!” I love seeing the determination in my students when they can give me back what they’ve learn. The most enjoyable thing I love is when my student has learn the skills need and applied them that they don’t need me so much anymore.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I am either watching YouTube or listening to music, playing volleyball, or studying the Bible.

Describe an amazing trip you took. Where did you go and what did you enjoy most?

I went on a Dance Minstrel mission trip to Trinidad and Tobago. I loved having the opportunity to worship with others in the art of dance and being able to teach children. My favorite part of the trip was getting to share love, hope and faith to women who were in jail. We were able to worship, teach and inspire together. It was a truly amazing experience.

If you were granted three wishes, what would they be and why?

For my first wish, I would want to ensure that my church community had everything they needed to help others, because life is found in the belief of others. Yes we are individuals, however we do need each other. My second wish would be used to take care of my family, their needs and desires. Finally my last wish would be to make sure that all children, regardless of their background, had access and is able to experience the very best education possible. Everyone deserves to have the very best.

Is there something exciting you are working on now? What is it and why did you choose to start it?

The most exciting thing I am working on is learning the whole book of Genesis in the Bible and learning Hebrew. I have been truly studying the Bible since our church turned into a school and it has been truly life-changing. My Bible has come alive before my eyes. Learning Hebrew brings me closer to God through being able to speak the language He spoke.

Is there a particular book that made a significant impact on you? What is it and why did it resonate with you?

The Book of Genesis has made a striking impact on me. Through this study, I have learned throughout history God was in the beginning and I was created in his image.

Please share your favorite life lesson quote. How is it relevant to your life?

“Nothing is ever truly yours, unless you discover it!…. Rabbi Messer. It’s relevant in my life because until I discovered how to learn, I struggled with comprehension and retaining. However, when I learned that I am a visual and auditory learner that is when I saw success that remained.
