Intern Spotlight on Mai Yang

Thank You For Being Such A Vital Part Of Our Team, Mai Yang. We Look Forward To Sharing More About You So Others Can Get To Know You Better!

Tell us a bit about your backstory and what led you down your current life path.

I have always been fascinated by linguistics, and this interest naturally led me to pursue it as my major. Throughout my academic journey, I developed a keen passion for education and language acquisition. Currently, I work as a full-time localization analyst, where I can apply my linguistic skills in a practical setting. Additionally, I am thrilled to be a part-time intern at E.R.E., contributing to content creation. This opportunity allows me to merge my academic background with real-world applications, and I find it incredibly rewarding to be involved in projects that align with my interests and skills.

What or who inspired you to pursue your major/career?

There wasn’t a singular influence; instead, my career path unfolded through self-exploration. The unwavering support of my family and friends played a crucial role in this journey. Additionally, I consider myself fortunate to have encountered both excellent and challenging teachers and mentors along the way. Each of them imparted valuable life and career lessons, contributing to the mosaic of experiences that shaped my professional trajectory.

What is one thing you are most proud of achieving in your life?

Embarking on the journey of going abroad independently and residing in a foreign country for five years stands out as a monumental achievement in my life. It reflects not only my courage to step into the unknown but also my adaptability to new environments. Navigating the complexities of a different culture and language has enriched my personal and professional growth in ways I hadn’t imagined. This accomplishment symbolizes my resilience in facing challenges head-on and my commitment to embracing diverse experiences. The memories, lessons, and connections forged during these five years testify to my capacity for independence and my willingness to embrace the world beyond familiar horizons.

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

My deepest gratitude goes to my grandmother, a true feminist and an unwavering source of support throughout my journey. Her unconditional love and constant encouragement have been pivotal in shaping who I am today. Even in the face of adversity, such as her courageous battle with brain tumors, she exhibited fearlessness. I vividly remember calling her before she entered the surgery room last year. Instead of expressing fear, she reassured me and offered words of encouragement. Despite not being physically present due to my commitment to working on my graduation thesis that same week, her strength and unwavering spirit have been a guiding force in my life, inspiring me to face challenges with resilience and determination.

Share one professional development goal and one personal goal you have for the upcoming year.

In the coming year, I’m pumped about diving deeper into the worlds of marketing and localization for my professional growth. On a more personal note, I’ve taken on the challenge of learning Korean, and it’s been a blast – I’m currently rocking a 200-day streak on Duolingo! This isn’t just about picking up a new language; it’s my way of connecting with different cultures and embracing diversity. And I also like how technology is combined with education when using Duolingo. Maintaining that streak is like a daily victory, and I’m genuinely proud of the progress I’ve made.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

What I enjoy most about volunteering is the sense of fulfillment and purpose it brings. Contributing my time and skills to a cause greater than myself provides a unique and rewarding experience. The opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others, whether through mentorship, education, or community service, is incredibly gratifying. Volunteering also allows me to connect with diverse individuals, share experiences, and foster a sense of community. It brings genuine joy to see the tangible difference that collective efforts can make, and the knowledge that I am part of something meaningful keeps me motivated and engaged in volunteer activities.

Tell us about an amazing trip you took. Where did you go and what did you enjoy most?

One amazing trip I had was more than a year after my undergraduate graduation during Thanksgiving. My friends from undergrad and I decided to organize a reunion and have a Friendsgiving together. The chosen destination was New York, and the experience was nothing short of magical. It was incredible to see everyone flying in from different places, coming together like a spark that lights up the sky. The excitement was palpable, and our evening chats extended into the late hours of the night.

However, our plans to return home hit a snag due to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which led to road closures. Undeterred, we found ourselves wandering the streets of New York late into the night. The atmosphere was surreal, with the city’s energy and the unexpected adventure creating a memorable and unique experience. The trip was a perfect blend of friendship, spontaneous moments, and the vibrant spirit of New York, making it truly unforgettable. That night, we felt like we were part of something extraordinary.

The road to success is difficult and requires tremendous dedication. What advice would you give to a young person who aspires to follow in your footsteps and emulate your success?

My sincere advice is to resist getting overwhelmed by external pressure and expectations. It’s crucial to pause and reflect on your genuine desires before diving into the hustle. Once you’ve identified your true goals, go after them with unwavering determination. Stay faithful to your passions and aspirations, allowing them to be the compass that directs you on your path to success. Remember, your journey is unique, and aligning with your authentic self will make the pursuit of your dreams more fulfilling.
